Door to Door Campaign - November 2006

On November 21st 2006 the Public Awareness Rally organised by the Door to Door campaign was held at the Conway Hall in Red Lion Square, Holborn. The event was attended by over 400 private hire operators & drivers from around London, also in attendance were the MPs for Southwark and Brent, TFL, the GMB union, the BBC and other media organisations, together with the Door to Door campaign organisers . Other attendees included Cab Aid as one of the campaigns main supporters and sponsors.
The purpose of the rally was to inform the general public and relevant parties of the discriminatory issues that Private Hire drivers and operators experience daily while running their businesses, their objective being to assert their rights to be treated the same as London Taxis and specifically being permitted to pick up and set down passengers on red routes. Following an excellent series of contributions from two MPs and various speakers from the industry, the spokesman from TFL announced that the Mayor of London was in outline agreement with the principles of allowing private hire vehicles equal rights to the London Taxis and that a committee was to be formed in early 2007 to progress the matter.
