The London Taxi Benevolent Association for War Disabled's 60th Anniversary Run to Worthing

10th June 2008

Cab Aid for the second time joined a fleet of some 100 London black cabs carrying 330 veterans from the London Area to Worthing, where they were joined by residents of the town's Queen Alexandra Hospital-Home for Disabled Ex-servicemen. Many of the veterans from all three services were in the company of a contigent of Chelsea Pensioners, proudly displaying rows of polished campaign medals on their red chests. Cab Aid were very pleased to be invited to attend and provided a cab with driver to assist where needed on the day. The Association started up by the President Harry Joel has been running this event since 1948, a magnificent record
At the Worthing Assembly Hall decorated with Union Jacks bunting and red, white and blue balloons and ribbons for the occasion they were greeted by the Mayor of Worthing, Dame Vera Lynn and other dignitaries. The committee of the LTBAWD were also in attendance to ensure that the well planned day went smoothly and that all the guests had a good time. They were wined and dined and also entertained by the theatre’s concert organ being played in great style, following a shuttle service by the cabs to the sea-front where many took the opportunity to take in the warm June sunshine with a stroll. Then it was back for tea and more entertainment from a jazz band until the time to bid farewell and return to the cabs for the return trip home. At Cab Aid we hope to be asked to attend again and help these deserving veterans enjoy another great outing.
